In both the individual counseling I do and in the classes I teach, I find that a simple, specific, step-by-step method is needed to find self-esteem. People want explicit directions on how to acquire and keep a positive image of themselves. It did no good for me to assure them that they were okay or have their classmates give them positive feedback. When people feel inadequate, they are not open to verbal strokes from the outside. They need to feel the warmth of positive thoughts from the inside; they need to speak to themselves in an approving manner. They want a system which they can put into action. Over the years, I have developed such a method which has proved to be successful when implemented by hundreds of counselees and students. This step-by-step system has also been presented at the many workshops I have conducted on self-esteem. I have received comments and letters from those in attendance saying that they have applied these techniques to their lives, and it has made a remarkable difference. They have asked me to record these systematic procedures in book form. This book is in response to their requests."
About the Author
Helen M. Johnson’s education includes the following: B.A. from the University of Nebraska with Phi Beta Kappa honors; B.S., M.A. in Education from the University of Minnesota; and M.A. in Counseling from Arizona State University.
She has been an elementary school teacher, co-owner of a children’s clothing shop, a high school counselor, and a counselor at Scottsdale Community College for over twenty years. She is also involved in lecturing, consulting and leading workshops.
Ms. Johnson's other passion is Mountain Bluebirds, about which she has written a book and produced a video.
